“It had a human-shaped skull with an elongated jawline and hair similar to the color of a cow or kangaroo, but with hair missing in many places due to decomposition,” said Bobbi-Lee Oates. “It was exactly like a mermaid shape but hairy because it seemed to have a tail or limb of some sort.”
this week, an admin from a marine biology Facebook group based in Australia shared a post with peculiar photos of a six-foot-long skeleton that scientists, thus far, have been unable to identify.
Oceanographers surmise there could be anywhere between 230,000 to 750,000 marine species in Australia’s waters. Although this particular find was discovered in Keppel Sands, Queensland, during a camping trip, and it has prompted underwater experts from all over the world to share their viewpoints on the matter.
“Definitely looks like a small cetacean to me,” said Rob Deaville from the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme. “I’m not familiar with the area nor which species are normally found there, so [I] can’t really take it any further than that.”
Despite an array of educated guesses and estimations, no one has been able to determine what Bobbi-Lee Oates discovered with certainty.
